As part of the AI NextGen 2025 Hackathon, I teamed up with four strangers turned teammates to build OpenRoom, an AI tool designed
to make hospital discharge summaries faster, safer and smarter. The challenge: In Australia, 25% of patients face delayed discharge, with clinicians spending up to 45 minutes on paperwork. That backlog costs hospitals millions, ties up beds and puts patients at risk of readmission. The approach: In just one week, we combined a 3-person dev team with a 2-person product design team to prototype an AI-powered system that automated accuracy checks, produced 5 minute summaries and simplified workflows while ensuring compliance and clinician oversight. The result: OpenRoom won the Alibaba Cloud Challenge, recognised for its potential to ease hospital pressure and improve care.
